About us

The Kamara Yokie Innovation Center (KYIC) is a first of its kind youth-owned and youth-led Innovation Center in Sierra Leone, which aims to create a safe multi-cultural space where innovators, creative minds, and problem solvers come together to create solutions to pressing challenges affecting local people. Through a human-centered problem-solving methodology, KYIC leverages 21st-century entrepreneurial leadership and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education principles to unlock the latent potential of young minds.

Our Vision

Our Vision is to mentor, support, and promote African Innovation by creating an enabling, safe, and standard space to harness the power of innovations on the continent, empowering youth with STEM education and entrepreneurial skills for a prosperous future.

Our Mission

Our mission is to build a generation of creative thinkers and problem solvers by 2030. Through STEM education digital literacy training, we are tackling the current global STEM skills shortage among Sierra Leonean Students and beyond.

We Believe That Education Is An Important Aspect In Every Person’s Life

Creativity stands as a beacon within the heart of the Kamara Yokie Innovation Center (KYIC), shining as an indispensable core value that fuels our mission and operations. In an era where the world is rapidly advancing, with technology and innovation driving societal transformation, the essence of creativity becomes not just a tool but a vital lifeline for the youth, the leaders of tomorrow. The founding story of KYIC, rooted in the visionary zeal of  Hawa Dominica Yokie and the insightful leadership of Abu Kamara, underscores the transformative power of creativity in bridging gaps and fostering growth.

STEM for Us, By Us Conference

The STEM for Us, By Us Conference is a high-impact annual gathering that celebrates Sierra Leonean and African innovation, creativity, and self-driven development in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). It brings together students, educators, innovators, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss, showcase, and co-create homegrown solutions that address Africa’s unique challenges — through the lens of STEM education and innovation. The conference emphasizes a powerful idea: “We are not waiting to be taught innovation — we are building it ourselves.”

VEX Robotics Program

VEX competitions provide a platform for students to engage in hands-on learning experiences that capitalize on the motivational effects of competitions and robotics. By participating in these competitions, students have the opportunity to not only learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts but also create an identity as a STEM learner. Through the process of designing, building, and programming robots, students are exposed to the practical application of STEM principles. They are encouraged to think critically, problem-solve, and collaborate with their peers. These competitions foster a sense of excitement and engagement that motivates students to further explore the world of STEM.

After-School Training Program

The After-School Training Program is a hands-on, skills-based initiative that gives students the opportunity to learn, explore, and create after regular school hours. It provides a safe, structured, and inspiring environment where learners engage in STEM, digital skills, creativity, and innovation, helping them grow beyond traditional academics. Designed for primary, junior, and senior secondary school students, the program bridges the gap between what schools teach and what the future demands; building practical, employable, and entrepreneurial skills in the process.
